Our Management Committee is keen to increase native bee knowledge in decision-makers, and to influence government actions.
Last month, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water asked for submissions about implementing Australia’s Strategy for Nature. From their website, “Australia’s Strategy for Nature 2024–2030 sets ambitious national targets to tackle the drivers of biodiversity decline, to protect and repair our precious places and put nature on a path to recovery.”
A small group from the Management Committee: Tim Heard, Megan Halcroft and Helen Hobbs, put together our submission. We highlighted the critical role of native bees. We called for improved baseline data on native bee populations, monitoring of native bee populations, increasing knowledge amongst stakeholders, and the careful management of introduced bee species in areas of ecological significance. We also highlighted the need for actions to reverse the effects of climate change, and clear accountability around the implementation of the strategy.
Whilst we may not see specific actions from our submission (we’ll let you know if we hear of anything), we see this kind of submission as raising awareness about our wonderful native bees. If you have questions about this, please contact Tim, Megan or Helen.
